About the event

As a leader in the VPS, you have a critical role in assisting government to manage and respond to new and emerging challenges. As a leader, integral competencies are required to ensure you and your team can best service your office and the public effectively. The program has been developed with the VPS capability framework in mind, covering content alligned to areas such as personal atributes, enabling delivery, authentic relationship and people leadership.

This program is for those aspiring to be or currently at the VPS 5-6 level, who want to increase their capability in both technical expertise and leadership. Adopting the content will enhance decision making, leadership attributes and assist with progression within the VPS.

​​

In each module we explore content and provide key outcomes on skills required to be effective as a VPS 5-6.

Our facilitator will provide insights into how they can be learnt and make the outcomes tangible and implementable when back in the workplace.

In this workshop attendees will enhance their capabilities to:

  • Assess risk and identify solutions to the challenges presented working in the VPS

  • Adopt a strategic mindset, an integral requirement at the VPS 5-6 level

  • Build team capability while driving change

  • Utilise SQ+EQ and an agile mindset to increase leadership effectiveness.

What to expect as a delegate:

  • 3 x 1/2 day facilitated program (am) with breakout sessions

  • One-on-one executive coaching session

  • The VPS Capability Framework explained

  • Collaboration with attendees from other Victorian Government Agencies

  • Smaller classes to promote interactivity

  • Delegate pack with course materials and goodies.

Day 2

  • Discover how to adopt a strategic mindset

  • Identify how to observe facts and reflect on the now and future

  • Learn strategy creation and strategy opposition

  • Understand effective strategy implementation - The 7 steps

Build Team Capability while Driving Transformational Change

  • Learn the foundations of leading change successfully

  • Identify team capability and focal areas for development to drive change

  • Discover strategies to reinforce positive patterns through the change process

  • Understand the importance of implementing collective leadership

Day 3

Leading with Agility and Resilience

  • Learn the core component of agile leadership and its 9 principles

  • Understand how to lead with agility as a VPS 5-6

  • Learn how to improve resilience and its importance in team cohesion

  • Explore strategies to create an agile and resilient culture to drive successful project execution

 

​​Doing Business with Social Intelligence (SQ) + Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

  • Discover the importance of EQ and identify your areas of growth

  • Learn the importance of SQ and actionable habits to increase influence

  • Explore the relationship between SQ + EQ and its impact on your team and the wider organisation

  • Identify how to improve SQ + EQ across your team to improve connection and delivery

Day 1

Identifying, Analysing and Mitigating Risk

  • Identify how to mitigate risks and understand risk analysis strategies

  • Learn risk prioritisation based on organisational objectives

  • Discover how to treat and respond to risk conditions internally and externally

  • Understand results monitoring methods and adjustments

 

Problem Solving in the VPS

  • Understand the approach to problem definition

  • Identify the symptoms and understand the root cause of the problem

  • Identify solutions and make the correct solution selection

  • Learn frameworks of how to implement solutions successfully

1 hour, 1-on-1 Executive Coaching Session

by the participant and coach prior to the session.

Suzie Thoraval

 

Leading our program will be a former Victorian Government chief, director

and head, having just left Department of Transport and Planning and having

previously worked at Portable Long Service Authority, Victorian Electoral

Commision and Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Suzie Thoraval is a highly regarded expert in leadership, mindset, resilience, and

navigating risk and uncertainty, with 25 years of strategic leadership experience across

government, corporates, not-for-profits, and universities in Australia and globally. Having spent

13 years working in government, Suzie understands the unique challenges faced by public servants and brings a wealth of relevant experience and practical insights to her workshops.

 

Her deep understanding of high-stakes environments, particularly in strategic influence and stakeholder management, provides participants with the insights in how to effectively manage shifting priorities. Suzie has helped develop numerous leaders and high-performing teams who stay engaged and resilient in times of change. As a board professional with strategic oversight experience, she focuses on fostering long-term organisational strength.  Her workshops are highly relevant to those seeking to improve their leadership and adaptability in public service.
